Natural stone steps, paver staircases, and boulder steps that handle grade changes safely and beautifully, from front entry steps to garden terraces.
Grade changes are everywhere in Central Oregon yards, sloped driveways, raised entries, terraced gardens. Steps done right make those transitions safe, functional, and visually sharp. Steps done wrong are a liability: rocking treads, heaved risers, and crumbling edges that get worse every winter.
541 Hardscaping installs stone and paver steps on a properly prepared base with consistent riser heights and tread depths that meet safe walking standards. Whether it's two steps from the path to the front door or a full 10-step garden staircase, we build them to stay put.

Most step failures come down to two things: inadequate footings and poor drainage. When water gets under a step and freezes, it lifts the stone. When a tread isn't set on a compacted base, it rocks from day one. Over time, both lead to dangerous, unstable steps.
We excavate under each step, compact road base, and set treads on a solid, level footing. Steps are pitched slightly forward (about 1 to 2%) so water drains off the tread surface instead of pooling and freezing. Risers are consistent in height so the staircase is safe to walk without counting each step.
Your front entry steps are the first thing guests interact with when they arrive. Crumbling concrete or mismatched pavers undermine your entire curb appeal. A clean set of natural stone or paver entry steps sets the tone for the whole property, and they last 20+ years when built correctly.
